In a massive announcement, the BCCI on Wednesday (December 8) named Rohit Sharma as the new ODI captain of the Indian cricket team.
Rohit replaced Virat Kohli as skipper in the 50-over format weeks after taking charge of the T20I side. Following the T20 World Cup 2021, Kohli had stepped down as T20I captain and Rohit took over the captaincy in the shortest format from the New Zealand series at home.
“The All-India Senior Selection Committee also decided to name Mr Rohit Sharma as the Captain of the ODI & T20I teams going forward,” BCCI’s official release said.

Reacting to the decision, former England skipper Michael Vaughan took to Twitter and wrote: “Very good decision”.
On the other hand, veteran commentator Harsha Bhogle opined that Kohli 'will feel a sense of loss' after the turn of events.
“However great a player Virat Kohli is, this is the time to reach out to him. It is inevitable he will feel a sense of loss. It is always tricky with two captains when both are playing all formats and it is critical Dravid, Kohli and Rohit are comfortable and have a common vision,” Harsha tweeted.
Here are the other reactions:
Rohit Sharma’s stint as full-time ODI captain will begin with the series against South Africa next month. Team India are due to play three ODIs on the South Africa tour from January 19 to January 23.
Rohit has the experience of leading the Indian ODI team previously in the absence of Virat Kohli. The Mumbai batter has also produced impressive results, winning the bilateral series and Asia Cup 2018.
