Sunil Gavaskar makes Instagram debut to celebrate 50th anniversary of his India debut

Gavaskar joined Instagram on Saturday as he celebrated 50th anniversary of his Test debut.

Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar celebrated the 50th anniversary of his India debut on Saturday (March 6) by making another debut, though this time off the field, as the legendary batsman has finally made his account on the popular social media platform – Instagram.

Gavaskar made his Instagram debut to celebrate the 50th anniversary of his Test debut for India. The then 21-year-old Gavaskar made his India debut on March 6, 1971, against the West Indies.

Gavaskar's son Rohan Gavaskar took to Twitter to announce the news of the former India captain joining Instagram. He tweeted, “Another debut !! This time on Instagram,”

While Gavaskar shared an old photo of himself from his playing days and captioned his first Instagram post: “Hello Instagram. I think I'm ready for another debut... #SMG10K”

Notably, in his debut Test match against the mighty West Indians, the right-hander notched up half-centuries in both innings, scoring 65 in the first and remaining unbeaten on 67 in the second innings to help India win the game by seven wickets against the hosts.

It was a landmark series for both India and the “Little Master” as the right-hander scored plenty of runs, 65, 67*, 116, 64, 1, 117*, 124, and 220 in his debut series, to help India beat West Indies at home for the first time, clinching the five-match Test series 1-0 as the other four matches were drawn.

Meanwhile, Gavaskar was also felicitated by the BCCI on the 50th anniversary of his Test debut during the lunch break on day three of the fourth and final Test between India and England at the Narendra Modi Stadium on Saturday. He received a commemorative Test cap from BCCI Secretary Jay Shah.
