BAN v WI 2021: Cricket fraternity lauds West Indies' 17-run win over Bangladesh in second Test, wins series 2-0

West Indies have whitewashed Bangladesh for the third time in their own backyard.

The inexperienced West Indies side, missing many of their first-choice players like regular captain Jason Holder Kemar Roach, Shimron Hetmyer, and Darren Bravo, fought valiantly against the home side.

Bangladesh was missing just Shakib Al Hasan in this Test match due to an injury. West Indies captain Kraigg Brathwaite won the toss and chose to bat first.

Thanks to Nkrumah Bonner (90), Joshua Da Silva (92), and Alzarri Joseph (82), West Indies posted 409 runs in their first innings. For Bangladesh, Abu Jayed (4/98) and Taijul Islam (4/108) were the picks of the bowlers.

Joshua Da Silva | GettyBangladesh in their first innings made 296 with Mehidy Hasan Miraz (57), Liton Das (71), and Mushfiqur Rahim (54) being the main contributors. Rahkeem Cornwall picked 5/74 for West Indies.

However, West Indies struck hard in the second innings, routing Bangladesh for 117 runs with Taijul adding four more wickets to his first-innings haul. Nayeem Hasan also picked 3/34. The home team was set 231 to win and equal the series 1-0 and avert a 2-0 whitewash.

Tamim Iqbal made 50, while Miraz made 31 and captain Mominul Haque made 26, but the West Indies bowlers kept the pressure on the Bangladeshi batsmen throughout the innings.

WI captain Kraigg Braithwaite | Getty Rahkeem Cornwall picked 4/105 in 30 overs, picking 9 wickets in the match, and was aided by Jomel Warrican’s 3/47 and captain Kraigg Brathwaite’s 3/25, as Bangladesh imploded for 213 runs.

West Indies won the Test match by 17 runs in the extra half-an-hour of play and also won the Test series 2-0. Cornwall was the star of the series with his 14 wickets. He was named the Player of the Match, while Nkrumah Bonner was named the Player of the Series.

This is only the fourth whitewash West Indies have inflicted on a home team. The last three have been in Bangladesh. Before that, they had blanked England in a five-Test series in 1984.

The cricket fraternity was all praises for the new-look West Indies team which beat a full-strength Bangladesh team in their own backyard.
