IND v ENG 2021: Vaughan recalls his dismissal of Tendulkar in 2002 after Moeen Ali cleans up Kohli for a duck

Michael Vaughan dismissed Sachin Tendulkar just like Kohli back in the 2002 Test series.

Indian captain Virat Kohli was dismissed for a duck on Day 1 of the ongoing second Test against England at MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai and the way the dashing cricketer was dismissed by Moeen Ali reminded Michael Vaughan of Sachin Tendulkar’s wicket in a similar fashion back in 2002.

Kohli was cheered by a 15,000-strong crowd on the opening day of the ongoing second Test in Chennai, but India’s batting superstar failed to live up to the expectations as the right-hander first couldn’t score a single run in the first four deliveries and then was left stunned by England spinner Moeen Ali.

The ball to remove Kohli was a classic off-spinner’s dismissal, as Moeen tossed up the delivery outside off stump as the anxious India captain tried to play an ambitious cover-drive, unfortunately for him, the ball turned sharply, went between bat and pad and clipped the top of middle and off stump to leave the crowd stunned as India’s cricketing hero fell for 0 on Saturday (February 13).

It was for the second time Kohli had been bowled by an off-spinner in his 89 Tests so far.

While Kohli was struggling to believe that he lost his wicket and the crowd was silent in Chennai on Day 1 of the ongoing second Test of the four-match Test series, Vaughan, former England captain, found similarities between Indian captain and Tendulkar’s mode of dismissal.

Back in a Test match between India and England in 2002 at Trent Bridge, Vaughan dismissed Tendulkar through the gate in a similar fashion for 92.

Vaughan tweeted on Saturday about Kohli’s dismissal: “Getting an Indian legend bowled through the gate isn’t that difficult as an off-spinner.”

Noteworthy, Kohli achieved an unwanted record on Saturday, as he is now second among Indian captains with 12 ducks after Sourav Ganguly (13) who has scored the most number of ducks across formats.
