Gambhir had said that if Dhoni had not reminded him of his milestone, he would have got his hundred.

MS Dhoni and Gautam Gambhir during the 2011 World Cup final | AFPFormer India opener Gautam Gambhir invited a lot of trouble for himself as he blamed MS Dhoni for distracting him during the finals of the 2011 World Cup final against Sri Lanka in Mumbai. This led to the opener missing his century in the chase of 276 runs and he was bowled by Thisara Perera for 97 runs.

MS Dhoni and Gambhir had steadied the ship after India had lost Sehwag, Tendulkar, and Kohli early in the chase, their 109-run partnership put India in the driving seat from where MS Dhoni made 91* and took the team for victory with a six off Kulasekara.

I tell every youngster and every person that before getting to 97, I never thought about my own individual score but looked at the target set by Sri Lanka. I remember that when an over was completed, I and Dhoni were at the crease. He told me that ‘these three runs are remaining, get these three runs and your hundred would be completed,” Gambhir was quoted as saying by The Week.

Meanwhile, his words didn’t sit well with fans of MS Dhoni and other fans in general, who trolled him mercilessly.
