England's fast bowler Jofra Archer was asked to prove his fitness, and he joined his county side Sussex's second XI to play against Gloucestershire second XI. He ended up picking six wickets for 27 and bundled out the opposition on a score of 79. This was his first FC match in 11 months.
It was a fitness test for the English pacer, and he bowled 12.1 overs without no fuss. That would have surely pleased England's team management more than the wickets. Not only that, Archer even scored a hundred with the bat later in the match. He reached the three figures in just 84 balls.
This match is Archer's first red-ball cricket match since September last year. His all-round performance shows what league he belongs. The fierce pacer even injured an opposition 19-year-old batsman, who didn't come out for fielding. Archer managed to ball a long spell of eight overs, bowling with full speed whenever asked to come on.
James Anderson has been ruled out of the second Ashes Test at Lord's with a calf injury, and it's an excellent opportunity for Archer to get into the side. Jason Gillespie, Sussex coach said to TalkSport, “Look, he’s 100% fit, he’s fine and ready to go. Personally, I think England missed a trick by not playing him [at Edgbaston] but he’ll certainly play at Lord’s. He has to play. To be perfectly blunt he had to start the first Test but the powers that be decided he wasn’t quite ready."
