Legendary Indian batter Sachin Tendulkar celebrated 15 years of India’s 2011 ICC World Cup win in his unique style. He was seen wearing the current India T20I uniform in a video he shared on his social media accounts.
Tendulkar, who began his World Cup journey in 1992, came close to winning the trophy in 2003, where he was the Player of the Tournament and had scored the most runs. But India lost the final to Australia, and his dream crashed.
Tendulkar continued to achieve that elusive dream, and it finally came true in the 2011 edition that was hosted by India, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh. Tendulkar played a huge role in India’s win with two centuries and a match-winning knock against Pakistan in the semi-final in Mohali.
India defeated Sri Lanka in the final in Mumbai on April 2, and Sachin Tendulkar was hoisted on the shoulders by young Indian players during the lap around the ground to thank the crowd.
Sharing a video on X, Tendulkar reflected on the intensity and significance of that historic moment as he wrote, “The first ball always makes your heart race… and that night, it never stopped. 15 years later, it still stays with us. We all grew up as a bunch of young cricketers, united by one dream. To win the World Cup for India. To everyone who was a part of the journey, and to all the fans…thank you for sharing it with us and making it so special. Jai Hind!”
The 2011 World Cup win ended India’s 28-year wait for the 50-over ICC trophy, after their last win in 1983 under Kapil Dev. Gautam Gambhir with 97 and MS Dhoni with 91* starred for India, as they chased down the 275-run target with ease, with Dhoni hitting the now famous six to win the final.
