Ravichandran Ashwin is widely regarded as one of the greatest spinners produced by India. He featured in 106 Tests, 116 ODIs and 65 T20Is, picking up 765 wickets and playing a pivotal role in India’s dominance across formats.
During his illustrious career, Ashwin played under the leadership of MS Dhoni, Virat Kohli, Ajinkya Rahane, KL Rahul, Virender Sehwag, Suresh Raina and Rohit Sharma. According to him, Rohit is the best of them all as captain.
Speaking at a recent event, Ashwin hailed Rohit as a leader ‘beyond exceptional’ and explained the reason why latter is the best skipper he has played along with.
“Captaincy or leadership, as you may call it, could well be powerful. But it is also a source of responsibility. I have had the opportunity and privilege to play alongside a lot of captains for the Indian team. Made some mistakes, being one myself. But Rohit, the captain, is someone that is truly beyond exceptional," Ashwin said.
“To have the interest of every single member in your squad in your mind and look after them without the iota of bias is no easy thing. And I have said this before, and I would say this again with Rohit alongside me. Probably the best captain I have played along with ever," he added.
Rohit was appointed as the captain of India’s white-ball teams in November 2021 after Virat Kohli decided to step down from his role as skipper in T20Is following the conclusion of the T20 World Cup, and in the first quarter of 2022, he also got the charge of the Test team.
Rohit Sharma was appointed India's full-time white-ball captain in December 2021 after Virat Kohli decided to step down as T20I skipper. He was subsequently named the Test captain in February 2022.
Under his leadership, India reached the WTC final and ODI World Cup final in 2023 and won the T20 World Cup in 2024, followed by the Champions Trophy triumph in 2025.
