ICC chairman Jay Shah referred to star Indian batter Rohit Sharma as India's captain at a recent event, and the video of the same has gone viral on social media. This comes after Rohit Sharma was replaced as India's captain in Tests and ODIs by Shubman Gill.
Rohit Sharma had led India to the T20 World Cup win in 2024 and retired from the format. He then led India to the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 in Dubai. In the midst of this, he, along with Virat Kohli, retired from Test cricket and then BCCI, to have one captain in two formats, made Shubman Gill the captain in both Tests and ODIs.
With the ODI World Cup scheduled for 2027 and Rohit, now 38, reaching the end of his career, the selectors decided to give Gill the reins of the 50-over team as well, allowing him plenty of time to settle in.
Despite no longer being India's serving captain, Jay Shah addressed Rohit as captain, eliciting a big, beaming smile from the veteran.
“Our captain is sitting here. I will call him captain only, as he has led the team to two ICC trophies. During the 2023 World Cup, after winning ten successive matches, we could only win hearts but could not lift the trophy. In February 2024, I had said in Rajkot that in the next World Cup, we will win both hearts and the cup," Shah said at the event.

Rohit Sharma had taken over as India captain in ODIs in 2021 from Virat Kohli and led India in 56 games. He won 42 games and lost 12 games.
