Legendary Australian cricketer Mark Waugh and ex-England captain Michael Vaughan have made their picks for the next great Test batter from the new generation of players.
When asked to name the next great Test batter, Mark Waugh gave three names—Yashasvi Jaiswal, Harry Brook, and Rachin Ravindra—during a discussion on the sidelines of the current fifth Ashes Test between Australia and England at Sydney Cricket Ground. However, he ultimately voted in favor of the Indian batter.
Jaiswal had made his India Test debut in 2023 against the West Indies and hammered a century in his first Test. Since then, he has excelled for India in whites, scoring 2511 runs in 28 tests, at an average of 49.23, including seven centuries and 13 fifties and a best score of 214*.
He is currently India's top-ranked Test batsman, and he demonstrated his class by smashing a century in a Test match played in Australia, England, and the West Indies.
“Well, I reckon there are three in the running. There’s Jaiswal, and there’s Harry Brook and Rachin Ravindra from New Zealand. I’m going with Jaiswal. 24 years of age, he’s (Jaiswal) already got a double hundred and averages just under 50. There’s something special about this kid, so I’ve got him down, Jaiswal, as the next champion batsman to join the elite group. Look at him. Brilliant player, so that's my pick, the young Indian," Waugh said on Kayo Sports X.
In the same discussion, former England captain Michael Vaughan also shared his pick for the next great Test batter, and he, like every other Englishman ever, picked a player from his country, and it was none other than Harry Brook.
Harry Brook has been excellent in Tests since his debut in 2022. In 34 tests, Brook has 3052 runs at an average of 54.50, including 10 centuries and 14 fifties, and the best score of 317.
“I’ll throw Shubham Gill in there (with Jaiswal and Rachin) as well, but not Harry Brook. Harry Brook. Harry Brook is the next one that we’re going to be talking about. We’re already talking about him on this trip with the way that he’s played.
He hasn’t got the amount of runs that I would have expected, but over the course of the next 10 years, I think we’re going to see some of the most extraordinary innings from this young chap. He’s already played many in his career so far. White-ball cricket, red-ball cricket. He’s an all-format player, and he’s box office," Vaughan said.
