Jacob Bethell hit his maiden century in Test cricket as he helped England gain a decent lead in the ongoing fifth and final Test against Australia. This match is being played at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) and saw Bethell’s family, including his father and mother, rejoice in his amazing moment of glory.
Australia resumed their first innings on day four on 517/8 and managed to stretch their total to 567 runs. Steve Smith made 138 runs, and Beau Webster remained unbeaten on 71. Brydon Carse and Josh Tongue picked three wickets each for England.
Ben Duckett and Harry Brook made 42 each, as Australia dismissed Zak Crawley, Joe Root, and Will Jacks for cheaply. However, Jacob Bethell remained unmoved, forming important partnerships with Duckett and Brook.
Bethell looked in sublime touch and brought up his 50 in 87 balls. And the 22-year-old left-hander continued hammering the Australian bowlers. Bethell scored his hundred in the final session, much to the joy of thousands of English fans at the SCG on Wednesday.
Bethell's parents were among the many England fans in Sydney. His father, Graham, was caught on camera growing obviously distraught as the left-handed batter hit the benchmark with a boundary.
Graham slapped the air in joy and joined the audience in applauding his son, who combined class and restraint in an innings that demonstrated clarity and calm.
