India defeated Sri Lanka in the first two ODIs of the three-match series in their own backyard recently to take an unassailable lead. Helping the Indian team win the first match was new captain Shikhar Dhawan who scored a brilliant 86* on his captaincy debut.
This has helped Dhawan make progress in the latest update of the ICC ODI players rankings. Dhawan jumped two places to 16th after his unbeaten half-century in the first match against Sri Lanka while Virat Kohli remained at the second spot in the latest ICC ODI rankings issued on Wednesday.
The rankings took into account the three-match series between Zimbabwe and Bangladesh, the third Ireland versus South Africa match, and the first two ODIs between Sri Lanka and India.
Dhawan accumulated 712 rating points and gain two slots, while Kohli has 848 points. Opener Rohit Sharma is in the third position with 817 points in the list headed by Pakistan's Babar Azam (873).
Amongst the bowlers’ rankings, Jasprit Bumrah at the no.6 spot is the only Indian in the top 10 rankings. In another movement, Yuzvendra Chahal (up four places to 20th) and South Africa's Tabraiz Shamsi (up to eight places to 39th) made significant headway.
