SA v IND 2021-22: BCCI sacks Virat Kohli as ODI captain, Rohit Sharma named new skipper

Rohit's stint as full-time ODI captain will begin with the ODI series against South Africa next month.

Rohit Sharma | GettyThe Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Wednesday (December 8) confirmed that Rohit Sharma will lead the Indian team in ODI cricket going forward.

Rohit replaces Virat Kohli as ODI skipper weeks after taking charge of the T20I side. Following the T20 World Cup 2021, Kohli had stepped down as T20I captain and Rohit took over the captaincy in the shortest format from the New Zealand series at home.

“The All-India Senior Selection Committee also decided to name Mr Rohit Sharma as the Captain of the ODI & T20I teams going forward,” BCCI’s official release said.

Rohit Sharma’s stint as full-time ODI captain will begin with the 50-over series against South Africa next month. Team India are due to play three ODIs on the upcoming tour of South Africa, starting January 19.

Rohit has the experience of leading the Indian ODI team previously in the absence of Virat Kohli. The Mumbai batter has produced impressive results as well by winning bilateral series and Asia Cup 2018.
