Indian captain Rohit Sharma is known for being expressive on the field, but not the way his predecessor Virat Kohli was. As India faced off against West Indies in the first T20I in Eden Gardens, Kolkata on February 16, it was the first time Kohli played a T20 under Rohit’s captaincy.
India won the toss and chose to field first. Leg-spinner Ravi Bishnoi was given his India debut as he received his cap from Yuzvendra Chahal.
West Indies batters Kyle Mayers and Nicholas Pooran did a good job at the start despite Brandon King falling early for 4 runs. Mayers made 31 in 24 balls, while Pooran hit two sixes against Yuzvendra Chahal.
On the fifth ball of the 8th over bowled by debutant Ravi Bishnoi, the ball went down the leg-side while Bishnoi appealed for a catch behind feverishly. Rohit Sharma was not happy with Bishnoi bowling down the leg side and chastised him for bowling wide down the leg side.
He then conversed with Virat Kohli while thinking about the DRS review, where Virat said that there are two referrals and two noises. Though not convinced about Bishnoi’s appeal, Rohit unwillingly went for the DRS review after Kohli seemingly persuaded him.
But it was not the end of the confusion there, the umpire at the bowling end called it a wide and while Rohit comically signaled for DRS, the square-leg umpire called for an umpire’s review for a stumping.
In the end, the TV replays showed that the ball had grazed the pad on its way to the keeper’s gloves and there was no stumping, as Chase’s foot was grounded. The wide was canceled and since it was an umpire’s review, India also saved their one referral.
