Rajasthan batter Deepak Hooda made his ODI debut in the first match of the series against West Indies, becoming India's 243rd ODI player. Hood received his India cap from former skipper Virat Kohli at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

Former India cricketer Irfan Pathan watched Hooda's debut ODI innings for India in his car. He was stuck in a traffic jam and had to follow the live action on his mobile.

It was India's 1000th ODI match, and they became the first team in cricket history to reach the milestone. India captain Rohit Sharma won the toss and he elected to bowl in the landmark match.

West Indies scored 176 after India spinners didn't allow them to score freely. Yuzvendra Chahal (4/49) and Washington Sundar (3/30) picked up seven wickets between them.

In reply, Rohit scored a half-century, while Virat Kohli perished on a score of 8 runs off 4 deliveries. Hooda, who posted a partnership of 62* runs with Suryakumar Yadav, scored unbeaten 26 runs as India chased down 178 runs in 28 overs after losing four wickets.

The 26-year-old and Irfan both have played for Baroda in domestic cricket before moving to a different team. Hooda had left Baroda and joined Rajasthan after a controversy with Krunal Pandya.
