Multiple former Indian and Sri Lankan cricketers hailed India captain Rohit Sharma for his sportsman spirit after he withdrew a run-out appeal after pacer Mohammad Shami had dismissed Lankan captain Dasun Shanaka at the non-striker’s end in ending moments of the 1st ODI in Guwahati.
The incident happened in the last over, when Shami before delivering the 4th ball of the over, ran out Shanaka at the non-striker’s end with the batter on 98, and then appealed as well. Shanaka was left bewildered given that he was so close to his century.
The on-field umpire Nitin Menon called for a TV review umpire, while captain Rohit Sharma and Shami discussed the issue and then Shami laughingly told Menon that they had withdrawn the appeal.

At the post-match presentation, Rohit spoke about this incident: “I had no idea Shami did that (run-out), he was batting on 98. The way he batted was brilliant, we cannot get him out like that. Not something that we thought off, hats off to him, he played really well.”
