IND v SL 2023: WATCH- Shami runs out Shanaka at non-striker end; Rohit withdraws appeal, explains why

Rohit Sharma withdrew the appeal and Shanaka completed a well deserved century.

Mohammad Shami ran out Dasun Shanaka at non-stirker's end with him on 98 | TwitterIndia won the first ODI of the three-match series against Sri Lanka at the Barsapara cricket ground in Guwahati, Assam on January 10, 2023, by 67 runs thanks to an amazing century by Virat Kohli and some disciplined bowling.

Dasun Shanaka won the toss and chose to field first.

Openers Shubman Gill (70) and captain Rohit Sharma (83) added 143 runs for the first wicket. The momentum then carried as Virat Kohli anchored one end, and first Shreyas Iyer (28) and then KL Rahul (39) kept the run rate going, as Kohli kept the scoreboard ticking.

He was dropped twice on his way to his 73rd international century but reached the milestone in 80 balls. Kohli was finally dismissed for 113 runs in 87 balls with 12 fours and 1 six, as India finished on 373/7 in 50 overs.

In reply, Mohammed Siraj hurt Sri Lanka's top order as he dismissed Avishka Fernando (5) and Kusal Mendis (0). Charith Asalanka made 23 before Umran Malik took his wicket and then hit them with the wicket of Pathum Nissanka, who had made 72 runs with 11 fours.

Mohammad Shami then removed Dhananjaya de Silva for 47, ending a good partnership between him and captain Dasun Shanaka. Shanaka then played a lone inning and finished with a brilliant century- 108* in 88 balls with 12 fours and 3 sixes as Sri Lanka ended with 306/8 in 50 overs.

There was some drama in the last over bowled by Mohammad Shami, who on the 4th ball of the over, ran out Shanaka at the non-striker’s end with the batter on 98 and then appealed as well. Shanaka was left bewildered given that he was so close to his century.

The on-field umpire Nitin Menon called for TV review, while captain Rohit Sharma and Shami discussed the issue and then Shami laughingly told Menon that they had withdrawn the appeal.

At the post-match presentation, Rohit spoke about this incident to Star Sports: I had no idea Shami had done that. When he went up in an appeal… Again, he [Shanaka] is batting on 98. The way he batted was brilliant. We got to give it to him. We cannot get him out like that. We wanted to get him out the way we thought we would get him out. But that was not something that we thought of. But again, hats off to him, he played really well.

The second ODI will be played in Kolkata on January 12, 2023.
