India completed a dominating win by an innings and 222 runs over Sri Lanka on Day 3 in Mohali to go 1-0 up in the two-match Test series.

Rohit Sharma in his first Test match as captain, decided to take the aggressive option of enforcing the follow-on after India bowled out Sri Lanka for 174 in the first innings to grab a lead of 400 runs.

His decision was vindicated by the bowlers as they bowled out the visitors for just 178 in the second essay to seal the innings win on the third day itself. It was the fifth-largest win for the side in Tests.

Ravindra Jadeja grabbed 9 wickets in the match after scoring 175* with the bat, while R Ashwin took 6 wickets and went past Kapil Dev to take the second spot in the all-time list of leading Test wicket-takers for India. Pacers Mohammad Shami and Jasprit Bumrah took 3 and 2 wickets respectively.

On a day where India was barely challenged there was a sense of lethargy during the second session which former captain Virat Kohli identified as he was seen gesturing to the crowd to make noise.
