IND v SA 2022: Sanju Samson likely to play the role of vice-captain during South Africa ODI series – Report

The ODI series will get underway on October 6 in Lucknow.

Sanju Samson | GettyBefore the T20 World Cup 2022, Team India are scheduled to play three T20Is and ODIs each against South Africa at home from September 28 to October 11.

While most of the players featuring in the 15-member T20 World Cup squad will take part in the T20I series, there is no clarity on the ODI team as yet.

However, a report published in ANI on Tuesday (September 27) claims that wicket-keeper batter Sanju Samson is likely to be named vice-captain for the three-match ODI series against South Africa.

The report further suggests that senior players are expected to be rested for the 50-over series, keeping in mind the next month’s global event in Australia.

“Samson could be named the vice-captain of the Indian team for the three-match ODI series as most of the senior players are likely to be rested for ICC T20 World Cup. Shikhar Dhawan is likely to lead the team,” ANI reported quoting a BCCI source.

Samson is currently captaining India A at home in the one-day series against New Zealand A.

The source further said that Rajat Patidar, who impressed one and all with his exploits in the IPL 2022 for RCB, is likely to make his ODI debut against South Africa.

The Chetan Sharma-led selection committee is likely to finalize the squad for the ODI series in the next few days.

The ODI series will get underway on October 6 in Lucknow. Ranchi and Delhi will host the second and third ODI on October 9 and 11, respectively.
