Former Australia pacer Jason Gillespie came out in support of India women's all-rounder Deepti Sharma over the controversial run-out during the third and final ODI between India and England women at Lord’s on Sept 24.
Deepti ran out England’s Charlie Dean at the non-striker's end in the third ODI to help India win the match by 16 and a historic 3-0 ODI series win against the hosts at Lord's.
Well, the Indian spin all-rounder’s move sparked a controversy despite it being all within the law, with many slamming her for going against the spirit of the game on social media.
Recently, England women’s team captain Heather Knight said that what Deepti did was within the law, but she should have informed Dean before running her out at the non-striker's end at Lord’s.
Knight wrote on Twitter: “The game is over. Charlie was dismissed legitimately, India were deserved winners of the match and the series. But no warnings were given. They don't need to be given, so it hasn't made the dismissal any less legitimate. But if they're comfortable with the decision to affect the run out, India shouldn't feel the need to justify it by lying about warnings.”
Later, Knight got the support of former England captain Michael Vaughan, who also agreed that people should ask the umpire whether there was any warning before Deepti ran out of Dean.
Well now, Knight and Vaughan were both slammed by former Australia pacer Jason Gillespie for making unwanted noise about the controversy on social media, despite everyone knowing that it was within the law.
Gillespie tweeted: “Sorry- there is nothing in the laws that says a warning should ever be given for unfair play. Play by the laws and the game will take care of itself. Lots of opinions on this topic and I respect everyone’s thoughts. However, while there is huge disagreement worldwide on what is and isn’t within the ‘spirit of cricket’ surely abiding by the laws of the game is the solution?”
