Indian batter Shreyas Iyer made his maiden opportunity in Test cricket count as he slammed a glorious century on Day 2 of the opening Test between India and New Zealand at Green Park, Kanpur.
The debut was unbeaten overnight on 75* and he took little to no time in reaching the three-figure mark. The right-hander achieved the landmark with a gentle dab behind point off Kayle Jamieson in the 92nd over of India’s first innings.
With that, Iyer became the 16th Indian to smash a century on Test debut. Prithvi Shaw was the last Indian to achieve this feat and also the youngest in the country.
Other big names to have scored a hundred on Test debut for India include Gundappa Viswanath, Mohammed Azharuddin, Sourav Ganguly, Virender Sehwag, Rohit Sharma, and Shikhar Dhawan.
Unfortunately for India, Shreyas Iyer got out soon after scoring his first Test century. Tim Southee got rid of him on 105, which included 13 fours and 2 sixes.
Iyer’s knock came at a crucial time for India as they lost three quick wickets in the second session on Day 1. Thanks to his innings, the hosts went into the Lunch break on Day 2 with 339/8 on the board, having R Ashwin (38*) and Umesh Yadav (4*) in the middle.
For his stellar display with the bat on Test debut, Shreyas Iyer received rich praise from the cricket fraternity on Twitter.
