Former Indian batter Wasim Jaffer believes that New Zealand batter Tom Latham is going to be key for the Kiwis against India in the ongoing two-match Test series.

The first Test match between India and New Zealand got underway on Thursday, November 25, at Green Park in Kanpur, with the hosts winning the toss and batting first.

Before the start of the match in Kanpur, Jaffer had said that Latham would be a key batter for New Zealand, given his ability to succeed in the subcontinent. He also mentioned that Latham plays the sweep shot well.

Highlighting the left-hander’s success in the subcontinent, Jaffer said that it will be a cracking contest between Latham and Indian off-spinner R Ashwin in the ongoing Test series in India.

Jaffer tweeted: “Tom Latham is going to be key for NZ. He has the game to succeed in the subcontinent. Plays the sweep shot well. Has a hundred in SL, two hundreds in UAE vs Pak, and got three fifties last time NZ were here. Ashwin v Latham is going to be a cracking contest.”

Meanwhile, New Zealand captain Kane Williamson also admitted that spin will play a big role in the ongoing two-match Test series in India.

Williamson stated, “I suppose it is important to adapt and adjust and see what might be the most effective. As we have seen in this part of the world, the spin component has been very large and it has played a big role in changing the complexion of the game. So I am sure both sides will be aware of that and looking to play strong spin component.”

Notably, India’s current score reads 150/4 in 53 overs with Kyle Jamieson snaring three wickets and Tim Southee one for New Zealand in the ongoing first Test in Kanpur.
