New Zealand cricket has named Daryl Mitchell as a replacement for injured Devon Conway in the squad for the Test series against India.
New Zealand will tour India for a three-match T20I series followed by a two-match Test series. The T20Is will be played from 17th November to 21st November while the Test series will begin from November 25th in Kanpur with second match to be played in Mumbai on 3rd December.
Ahead of the series against India, New Zealand suffered a major blow as Devon Conway was ruled out of the tour after he broke his right hand when he struck it on the bat following his dismissal against England in the semi-final 1 of the ongoing T20 World Cup 2021.
While New Zealand has not named Conway’s replacement in T20Is, they have asked Daryl Mitchell to stay with the squad for the Test series.
New Zealand head coach Gary Stead said that it’s a shame for Devon Conway to miss out on the first series of the new edition of the World Test Championship but it’s an opportunity for Daryl Mitchell and with his versatility, he can cover a lot of batting positions.
“It's a shame for Devon to miss out on the first series of the new World Test Championship cycle, but it also offers up an opportunity for someone else.
Daryl's versatility means he can cover a lot of batting positions and he's certainly got plenty of confidence at the moment. He's proven he can perform in Test cricket and I know he's excited to rejoin the Test group,” Gary Stead said in a statement issued by New Zealand Cricket.
New Zealand will play Australia in the final of the T20 World Cup 2021 on 14th November in Dubai and then will reach India on Monday (15th November) for their tour.
