India Captain Virat Kohli will be reaching a big milestone when he steps out against New Zealand in the first ODI at Wankhede Stadium on Sunday. This ODI will be the 200^th ODI for the Indian skipper and he will be reaching the milestone in 9 years.

Kohli made his ODI debut against Sri Lanka in 2008, just after he led India U-19 team to the World Cup win in Malaysia. Since then, he has been breaking records after records in ODI cricket. Currently his record stands at 8767 runs in 199 ODI matches at an average of 55.13 and a strike rate of 91.47.

Kohli is second on the list of most centuries in ODI cricket with 30 centuries to his name, just behind Sachin Tendulkar’s record of 49. Kohli’s highest score of 183 came against Pakistan in Asia Cup in 2012. He also has 45 fifties to his name. However, his record batting second and chasing a target is something else and he is regarded as one of the best chasers in ODI history.

Scores a century on World Cup debut in 2011 vs Bangladesh

Virat Kohli made his name on the biggest stage of all, the World Cup in his very first match against Bangladesh. India played the first match of the 2011 World Cup at Dhaka and thanks to 175 from Virender Sehwag and a scintillating World Cup debut ton by Virat Kohli, scored 370 batting first.

Bangladesh could only muster 283 runs to lose the match by 87 runs and Virat Kohli became the first Indian to score a century in his first match in World Cup cricket. From then on, it was game on for Kohli, whose small contribution of 35 runs in the finals of the same tournament, helped India lift the trophy after 28 years.  

Plays one of the greatest innings in a chase in ODI history against Sri Lanka

Virat Kohli is widely regarded as one of the greatest chasers in ODI history. If you ask any one innings which got Kohli as the reputation of the greatest chasers, they will name his brilliant 133* against Sri Lanka at Hobart in 2012.

Thanks to Dilshan’s 160 and Sangakkara’s 105, Sri Lanka put up a big score of 320/4 on board against India. India had to chase the target down in fewer than 40 overs, if they wanted to keep their chases of qualifying for the finals of the tri-series down under.

IRFAN PATHAN STILL HOPES TO MAKE INDIA COMEBACK

Tendulkar and Sehwag did their bit in the chase, scoring 54 runs in 6 overs. But it all came down to Virat Kohli, whose 133* in 86 balls with 16 fours and 2 sixes; along with Gambhir’s 63 and Raina’s 40* off 24 balls, took India to the win in 36.4 overs.

However, it was Kohli, who took on Sri Lanka’s most lethal bowler, Lasith Malinga and tore him apart, as Malinga conceded 96 runs in just 7.4 overs. Kohli even took Malinga for 24 runs in an over.

Hits his highest ODI score against Pakistan in 2012 Asia Cup

Virat Kohli loves playing against Pakistan in any format, though he is yet to play a Test against Pakistan. Kohli has had many battles with Pakistani bowlers in ODIs and T20Is over the years, but this innings of his, can be termed as one of the most exciting and brutal of all.

Pakistan played India in Asia Cup 2012 in Dhaka and put on 329/6 batting first. Both openers Nasir Jamshed (112) and Mohammad Hafeez (105) put on 224 for the first wicket.

India was staring at a chase of 330 on a Dhaka pitch against the likes of Umar Gul, Saeed Ajmal, Shahid Afridi and Wahab Riaz. Pakistan got Gambhir out in the first over itself, but Sachin Tendulkar (52) and Rohit Sharma (68) aided a rampaging Virat Kohli, who handled the chase like a master.

Kohli scored 183 in 148 balls with 22 fours and 1 six. India chased down the total with 6 wickets in hand in the 48^th over.

Coincidently, Kohli emulated two India captains in Sourav Ganguly and MS Dhoni in scoring 183. Both Ganguly and MS Dhoni’s highest ODI score is 183 and 183* respectively. Ganguly scored his against Sri Lanka in the 1999 World Cup and then Ganguly was made captain in 2000. Whereas, MS Dhoni scored his 183* against Sri Lanka in 2005 and was made India’s T20I captain in 2007.

Virat Kohli followed the footsteps of those two captains and was made India’s full time captain in 2016.

Scores the fastest ODI century by an Indian

The India-Australia 7 matches ODI series in 2013 in India is one of the highest run scoring series in ODI history. During the second ODI at Jaipur, India and Virat Kohli made history in what is considered to be one of the greatest chases in India ODI history.

Australia posted a humongous 359/5 in 50 overs with Captain George Bailey making 92* and Shane Watson, Phil Hughes, Aaron Finch and Glenn Maxwell scoring half centuries.

India needed a quick start and Shikhar Dhawan (95) and Rohit Sharma (141*) provided the same, as the opening duo added 176 runs together. Then walked in Virat Kohli and he blasted the Australia bowlers to all parts of the ground.

Kohli finished the match in a hurry, scoring 100* in 52 balls with 7 sixes and 8 fours. In the process, he broke Virender Sehwag’s record of the fastest ODI century by any Indian. Kohli looked like a man possessed to finish the match as soon as possible and India chased down 359, scoring 362/1 in just 43.3 overs.  

Brilliant World Cup hundred vs Pakistan

India and Pakistan met in a much hyped match during the 2015 ICC World Cup.

India scored 300/7 against a potent Pakistani attack. Shikhar Dhawan smacked 73 runs, but it was Virat Kohli’s 107 in 126 balls, that kept the Indian innings together. He hit 8 fours on a lively Adelaide pitch. Suresh Raina’s 56 ball 74 aided India in posting 300, as Sohail Khan picked up a 5 wicket haul.
