Speculations are rife that the BCCI selection committee has informed Rohit Sharma about him being not in the scheme of things for the 2027 ODI World Cup, slated to be held in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Naimbia.
The team management reportedly aims to transition to younger talents like Yashasvi Jaiswal, leaving the veteran opener to decide on his ODI future following the ongoing England assignment.
The reports emerged amidst a lean patch for Rohit in ODIs. He has hit the 50-run mark only once in eight innings this year and has looked a pale shadow of himself in the ongoing England series, returning with scores of 11 (21 balls) and 26 (47 balls) in two outings.
However, BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia firmly denied the rumours that the 39-year-old will hang up his boots from international cricket after the third ODI against England at Lord’s this Sunday (July 19).
“There are a lot of speculations going on in the media about Rohit Sharma’s future. I want to firmly assert that there has been no such discussion that Rohit will be playing his last match at Lord’s on Sunday,” Saikia told RevSportz.
Having retired from T20Is and Tests in the 2024-25 season, Rohit Sharma remains active only in the ODI format for India.
While Sharma’s long-term spot for the 2027 World Cup remains open to form and fitness evaluations, Saikia’s statement confirms that his international career will continue past this weekend's game.
“Rohit is a regular member of the Indian ODI team and he will continue to represent the country as long as he is in the scheme of things. In other words, the Lord’s ODI won’t be his last match,” the BCCI secretary added.
He also urged the entire team to ignore outside media noise and focus on the series-decider against England.
“Each member of Team India now is required to focus on the most crucial match of the ODI series at Lord’s on Sunday and ignore the wild speculations running in a few media circles and forums,” Saikia remarked.
