The BCCI selection panel has likely told the veteran India opener Rohit Sharma that the time is up for him in ODI cricket as well. An extended run of poor form in the format, which included only one fifty in eight ODIs now, might reportedly see Rohit Sharma play his final ODI for India at Lord’s on July 19, Sunday.
According to Indian Express reports, the Indian selection committee and coach Gautam Gambhir have seemingly spoken to Rohit Sharma last week and outlined their plans. The selection committee is not considering Sharma for the 2027 ICC Cricket World Cup, preferring to give young players like Yashasvi Jaiswal, who has been waiting in the wings, an opportunity.
Rohit Sharma has managed 241 runs in 8 ODIs in 2026, with only one fifty that came against Afghanistan in Chennai recently. In the ongoing ODI series against England, he has managed scores of 11 and 26. Even his 26 in the recent second ODI in Cardiff was a scratchy one, coming in 47 balls with one four and one six.
“Selectors have informed Rohit he is not in their scheme of things post the England tour, and they are moving on from him after this series. Though he wanted to continue, especially after working on his fitness. The selectors have left the ball in Sharma’s court to decide his future,” a BCCI source told Indian Express.
It is learned that Sharma spoke to a few BCCI officials too on the sidelines of the England series, and the opener wasn’t happy with the decision.
Rohit Sharma retired from T20Is after winning the T20 World Cup in 2024 and then, in May of 2025, announced his retirement from Test cricket as well.
Since Sharma’s retirement from Tests and T20Is, the BCCI selection committee, in consultation with team management, wanted to groom more youngsters, keeping the future of Indian cricket in mind. With Rohit Sharma continuing to play ODIs, talented players like Yashasvi Jaiswal had to warm the bench.
Despite winning the ICC Champions Trophy in 2025, the BCCI removed Rohit Sharma from captaincy, handing the reins to Shubman Gill.
Rohit Sharma is one of the all-time great ODI cricketers, with 11731 runs in 286 ODIs to date. He has 33 centuries and 62 fifties to his name at an average of 48.67. His highest score of 264 is the highest-ever individual ODI score, and he remains the only batter to hit multiple double centuries in the format.
