Former Indian cricketer Wasim Jaffer wasn’t really impressed with Jasprit Bumrah’s captaincy and said that Team India felt the absence of their regular captain Rohit Sharma during the rescheduled fifth and final Test against England at Edgbaston.
Jaffer further criticized India's defensive field set-up and believed that things would have been different if Rohit was leading the team during their seven-wicket defeat in the final Test against England.
As reported by ESPNCricinfo, Wasim Jaffer said: “The field position, that too much defensive fielding position for far too long made batting lot easier. Jasprit Bumrah might have played a cat and mouse game, you need to be a little bit pro-active, which he wasn't and you cannot complain because it was his first Test match. Probably if Rohit was there, a much more mature captain, somebody who has done that before it would have made a difference.”
He also felt India's batting in the third innings put the touring side in the back seat against England, as they could only score 245 in the second innings against England. The former cricketer also said even if India had posted over 400 runs, England would have crossed the line then also.
Jaffer signed off by saying, “Probably batting in the third innings led England into the game. India could have batted them out of the game and that didn't happen and that presented an opportunity. Any score England would have gone for it, probably 400 and 425 they would have gone for it as there was a time in the game. But I think the third inning batting of India allowed them to come into the game.”
