Jasprit Bumrah-led Indian team on Tuesday (July 5) suffered a heartbreaking seven-wicket defeat at the hands of England in the rescheduled fifth Test at Edgbaston despite dominating the match for first three days.

Leading by 132 runs, India's second innings folded for a paltry 245, allowing England to stage a comeback in the Test match.

Chasing 378 to win, the hosts rode on unbeaten centuries from Joe Root (142*) and Jonny Bairstow (114*) to get over the line and level the series 2-2.

For his twin tons in the game, Bairstow earned the Player-of-the-Match award whereas Root was named England’s Player-of-the-Series for piling up 737 runs with four centuries in five Tests.

On the other hand, Bumrah was awarded Player-of-the-Series from the Indian camp for claiming 23 wickets in five Tests. However, it seemed that the stand-in India skipper wasn’t too happy with the award as his team ended up losing the Edgbaston Test after being in the driver’s seat.

When Bumrah was called for the post-match interview, the right-arm pacer only collected the medal and decided against picking up the champagne to celebrate his success.

Speaking after the game, Jasprit Bumrah rued his team’s dismal show with the bat in the second innings.

"That's the beauty of Test cricket, even if you have three good days. We fell short with the bat yesterday and that is where we let the opposition in to let the match slip away from us. Ifs and buts can always be there. If you go back, if there was no rain in the first match, we could have won the series. But England played really well. We have drawn the series and both teams played very good cricket and it was a fair result," he said at the post-match presentation ceremony.

Bumrah admitted that they faltered while executing the plans and also talked about his captaincy future.

“We could have been a little straighter in our bowling lines and use the variable bounce. The captaincy future is not what I decide. I like the responsibility. It was a good challenge, a new challenge. It was an honour to lead the team and a great experience," he remarked.
