The third day of the ongoing Edgbaston Test between India and England grabbed the headlines for a heated exchange between Virat Kohli and Jonny Bairstow.
The England batter was struggling in the morning session, having scored 13 off 61 balls and survived a few close calls. However, it all changed after the former India skipper triggered him by sledging.
Kohli and Bairstow argued for a while in the middle before the latter took on the Indian bowlers to smash 93 off his next 79 balls.
The video of Kohli and Bairstow’s on-field altercation went viral on social media and the Englishman opened up about it after the day’s play.
"We have played against each other for a solid 10 years now. It's a bit of craic. We are fiercely competitive on the field and that's what it is about. We are playing Test cricket and we are two competitors. That's why we play the game and it brings the best out of us. Whatever it takes, you want to get your team over the line and that's part and parcel of the game," Bairstow said in a video shared on Twitter by Sky Sports News.
Jonny Bairstow ended up scoring an entertaining century (106 off 140 balls), propelling England to 284/10 in the first innings. However, the visitors took a massive lead of 132 runs with Mohammed Siraj (4-66) and Jasprit Bumrah (3-68) starring with the ball.
Batting in the second innings, India scored 125/3 at the close of play on Day 3, extending the lead to 257 runs. Cheteshwar Pujara remained unbeaten on 50 with Rishabh Pant giving him company on 30 not out.
