ENG v IND 2021: VVS Laxman feels that it's time to give Ajinkya Rahane a break

Rahane scored 14 and 0 in the fourth Test at The Oval.

Ajinkya rahane | GettyAjinkya Rahane registered a duck in the second innings of the fourth Test played at The Oval. The Indian vice-captain has scored only 109 runs at an average of 15.57 in seven innings in the ongoing England Test series.

Rahane is searching for runs ever since the start of 2021. He has scored 372 runs at an average of 19.67 this year with just two half-centuries in 19 innings.

The middle-order batsman looked at sea during his eight-ball stay at the crease. He was given out LBW in the 102nd over bowled by Woakes.

The DRS review, however, saved him as it revealed that the ball would have bounced over the stumps. The Mumbai batsman was given out LBW again when he played the wrong line against the same bowler in his next over.

Former India batsman VVS Laxman said that Rahane needs a break as he did not look convincing even once during his eight-ball stay at the crease.

"It's time to give Rahane a break. I am not sure of what the future holds for him. He is a quality player and I always believe that quality players come back into the team. But, the kind of form and confidence he has shown and the body language when he was out there in the middle… Not once during his eight-ball innings did Ajinkya Rahane look convincing," Laxman said on ESPNCricinfo.

Despite Rahane’s duck, team India managed to score 466 runs in the second innings, setting a target of 368 runs for England to chase.
