England skipper Joe Root continued his great run of form as he slammed a glorious hundred on the third day of the ongoing second Test against India at Lord’s.
High on confidence after scores of 64 and 109 in the first Test at Trent Bridge, Root scored 180* to take the hosts to 391/10, ensuring a handy first-innings lead of 27 runs over India.
The England captain was unbeaten on 48 at the close of play on Day 2. He shared a 121-run stand for the fourth wicket with Jonny Bairstow (57) before forging substantial partnerships with Jos Buttler (23) and Moeen Ali (27).
While the wickets kept falling, Root held the one end firmly to notch up his 22nd century in the longest format of the game. He eventually remained unbeaten on 180 to give the home team an edge at stumps on Day 3.
For the tourists, Mohammed Siraj (4-94) returned with four wickets while Ishant Sharma (3-69) and Mohammad Shami (2-95) picked up five scalps between them.
Joe Root received rich praise from the cricket fraternity on Twitter for his stellar knock with the bat.
