During the opening Test between England and India at Trent Bridge, Indian fans had to reportedly cope racial abuse by a set of English fans.
According to a report published in Sportskeeda, a British Indian woman has opened up about her unpleasant experience at Trent Bridge. She was attending the game with her family and claimed that a section of the English crowd was aiming racial abuse at the Indian players.
Recounting the turn of events on Reddit, the woman further said that she and her family were subjected to racial slurs once they chose to speak up.
As per the fan, the English fans called Mohammad Shami as 'Sh**y Shami", when the Indian pacer was fielding near the boundary ropes skipper Virat Kohli was labelled as ‘wa**er Kohli' after he lost a review.
The report also says that the British Indian woman took the matter to a steward in the stand when she was told to 'go back to India' by an England fan. The steward responded swiftly and threw the culprit out of the venue.
After the incident, the fan and her family were moved to a stand where Indian fans were in large numbers. However, a small section of English fans still directed racial slurs towards their Indian counterparts with chants of 'Delta', referring to the Indian-variant of COVID-19.
Notably, the Indian players have not yet registered a complaint as they were probably unaware of the distasteful comments directed at them.
Coming to the match, the first Test ended in a draw as a result of the incessant rain on the final day.
Chasing 209 in the fourth innings, the visitors were 51/2 at the close of play on Day 4 with Rohit Sharma (12*) and Cheteshwar Pujara (12*) unbeaten in the middle.
