Virat Kohli, the champion Indian batter, has achieved what was once deemed impossible, as he hit his 50th ODI century. He broke Sachin Tendulkar’s record of 49 ODI tons in the ongoing ICC World Cup 2023 semi-final between India and New Zealand, being played in Mumbai on November 15.
Rohit Sharma had won the toss and chosen to bat first. He gave India a flying start with a 29-ball 47 knock. Shubman Gill scored 79 in 65 balls before severe cramps led to him retiring hurt.
But then, Virat Kohli, who came into this important knockout game on the back of 594 runs in 9 matches in league stages, showcased amazing batting prowess. He reached his 50 in 59 balls and then went on to complete the most memorable century in ODI history.
He became the first batter to hit 50 ODI centuries, going past Sachin Tendulkar’s record of 49 tons. In all, Kohli made 117 runs with 9 fours and 2 sixes and added 163 runs with Shreyas Iyer.
During his knock, Kohli also went past 700 runs in CWC 2023, becoming the first batter to cross this milestone in a single World Cup edition. This was also Virat Kohli's 8th fifty-plus score in CWC 2023, the most by a batter in a single World Cup edition.
The Indian cricket fraternity was all praises for perhaps the greatest white-ball batter of all time Virat Kohli and lauded him on X.
