India’s star batter Virat Kohli on Sunday (November 12) picked up his maiden World Cup wicket as he dismissed the Netherlands skipper Scott Edwards at Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru.

During the 25th over of the Dutch innings, Kohli tried bowling a wide but Edwards didn’t opt to leave the ball and instead went for a glance, only to be strangled down the leg side.

Wicketkeeper KL Rahul completed an easy catch behind the stumps to end Scott Edwards’ innings on 17.

After the game, India bowling coach Paras Mhambrey praised Kohli’s “nice set up” to get rid of the Netherlands captain.

“It was a nice set up. It was lovely to see Virat’s wicket. I could see him adjusting the fine leg a little bit, looked at KL (Rahul) saying where he is going to bowl. It was a lovely set up,” Mhambrey told bcci.tv.

It was Virat Kohli’s fifth wicket in ODI cricket. Brendon McCullum, Quinton de Kock, Alastair Cook and Craig Kieswetter were his victims in the past.

“I had a chat with Rohit on how could we use Virat. With the new ball, he swings the ball and gives us that little bit in the powerplay.

“The bigger challenge with Virat was the middle phase, which he has done in this game. He ticked that box as well.

“Now we are going to push him for the death, let’s see when that happens, but I am sure he does have that really nipping, sharp yorkers for the right-handed batters. I think we will see little bit of that as well,” said Mhambrey.

Besides Kohli, the likes of Shubman Gill, Suryakumar Yadav and skipper Rohit Sharma himself bowled in the match against the Netherlands.

In fact, Rohit also returned with the wicket of Teja Nidamanuru to restrict the Dutch innings to 250 after posting 410 on the board.

“It’s been two years since I have been after Rohit about this to get Surya bowl in the match. Shubman is really building up nicely. Both of them are still work in progress.

“And finally captain bowled himself, rolled his arm over. I could see the glimpse of Virat, Shubman bowling in the side nets, finally happy to see that in the match,” the bowling coach said.

India ended the league stage unbeaten to qualify for the semi-final, where they will face New Zealand at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on November 15.
