Sri Lanka and New Zealand are clashing in a must-win game for BlackCaps in the ongoing ICC World Cup 2023 in Bengaluru on November 9.
New Zealand captain Kane Williamson won the toss and chose to bowl first at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium. And though Kusal Perera made 51 in 28 balls only, the rest of Sri Lanka's batters began falling like 9 pins.
Trent Boult and Tim Southee ran through the Lankan batting line up leaving them 70/5 at one stage. This brought Angelo Mathews to the crease and the fans saw a light-hearted banter between him and New Zealand captain Kane Williamson.

Notably, Mathews became the first batter in international cricket to be dismissed timed out, which happened in Sri Lanka’s game against Bangladesh in Delhi. Mathews’ helmet strap broke just as he was getting ready to face Shakib Al Hasan. He called for a new helmet and the time ran out for him.
Shakib Al Hasan, prompted by an unknown Bangladeshi fielder, appealed to the on-field umpires for timed out and despite pleas from Mathews, the batter was given out.
In this match, when Mathews was walking in to face the first ball, first Trent Boult and then Kane Williamson had some fun with the Sri Lankan cricketer. The two players welcomed Mathews on the pitch and joked about his helmet’s strap, which invoked a smile from the Sri Lanka all-rounder.
