CWC 2023: Fans react as Chris Woakes funnily notifies umpires about his helmet issue to avoid getting timed out

England won the toss against Netherlands and opted to bat first in Pune.

Chris Woakes | XEngland all-rounder Chris Woakes took no chances when he noticed his helmet had malfunctioned when he came to bat in the ongoing ICC World Cup 2023 tournament match against Netherlands being played in Pune on November 8.

Jos Buttler won the toss and chose to bat first as England looked to finish on a high in their last two league stage matches.

However, though Dawid Malan gave his side a good start with a knock of 87 runs, England faltered a bit in the middle overs. They lost wickets of Joe Root (28), Harry Brook (11), Jos Buttler (5) and Moeen Ali (4).

But Ben Stokes stuck around and along with Chris Woakes shepherded the team to a safe total.

Chris Woakes came out to bat in the 36th over at the fall of Moeen’s wicket and promptly as he arrived at the crease, noticed his helmet was faulty and hilariously notified the umpires about the problem.

This was a cheeky dig at Shakib Al Hasan, who appealed for timed out against Angelo Mathews the other day when Sri Lanka and Bangladesh collided in Delhi. Mathews suffered a broken helmet strap and had called for a new one.

But the time had run out for him to face the ball and Shakib appealed for timed out. Mathews became the first batter in international cricket to get out in this manner.

Chris Woakes remembered the same instance and immediately upon noticing the issue, smilingly approached the umpires before calling for a new helmet. This gesture of Woakes didn’t go unnoticed by cricket fans, who shared their reactions on social media.
