CWC 2023: WATCH – Shubman Gill stuns Rohit Sharma by asking about India's unwanted record vs New Zealand in World Cup

India are due to face New Zealand India in Dharamsala on October 22.

Shubman Gill and Rohit Sharma | BCCIThe Indian cricket team has had a terrific start to its World Cup 2023 campaign. Rohit Sharma and his men have won all four matches convincingly so far against Australia, Afghanistan, Pakistan and Bangladesh.

However, India’s biggest challenge is in the offing as they are due to face New Zealand India in Dharamsala on Sunday (October 22).

The Kiwis are also on a four-match winning streak. In fact, they have a better Net Run Rate than India and, thus, occupy the top spot on the points table featuring 10 teams.

Over the years, the Black Caps have proved to be a bogey for the Indian team in Cricket World Cup. In the 2019 edition, they ended India’s campaign in the semi-final.

In total, India and New Zealand have faced each other in 9 matches in the World Cup, with the latter winning five times as opposed to India’s three while one match ended without a result.

Ahead of the marquee fixture, India skipper Rohit Sharma faced an unexpected question from teammate Shubman Gill.

The young opener asked his captain about India’s underwhelming record against New Zealand in the World Cup and whether they will be able to end the streak on Sunday.

Here’s how the conversation between the two unfolded on bcci.tv:

Gill: Someone asked me in the press conference that we haven't beaten New Zealand in an ICC tournament since 2003…

Rohit: That's true. But we are playing good cricket and that's all we can do from our end.

Gill: So, will we definitely end the streak on Sunday?

Rohit: See we don't play the kind of cricket where we guarantee anything. When we reach the ground, we'll have to do what we are doing as a team. We can't think too far ahead. Yes, we've not had the result in the past but… (before being interrupted by Gill with another question)”
