Harbhajan Singh believes that the Rohit Sharma-led Indian cricket team will have to make two changes to their well-set playing XI to make up for the injured Hardik Pandya for their next match against New Zealand in the ongoing ICC Cricket World Cup 2023.
The former Indian spinner further highlighted that Dharamsala, the venue for India’s next match against New Zealand, has shown a tendency for more swing compared to the other venues so far.
Given Pandya’s absence and conditions in Dharamsala, Harbhajan proposed two significant changes. First, the commentator suggested Team India to bring in fast bowler Mohammad Shami in place of the all-rounder Shardul Thakur to take advantage of the swinging conditions.
The 2011 World Cup winner further recommended considering either Ishan Kishan or Suryakumar Yadav for the No. 6 batting position in the Playing XI. However, Harbhajan feels Suryakumar should be given a nod due to his proficiency in finishing matches.
Harbhajan Singh was quoted as saying by Aaj Tak: “It's a big issue for India if Hardik Pandya is not fit. He sets our combination and if he doesn't play then you will have to change it. You can either play Ishan Kishan or Suryakumar Yadav as a pure batter.”
He signed off by saying, “We are playing Shardul Thakur because of his all-rounder abilities. I think you should bring Mohammed Shami in his place as he can give you solid 10 overs.”
