The legendary Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar slammed the way Shreyas Iyer and Shubman Gill threw away their wickets against Bangladesh in the 17th match of the ongoing ICC Cricket World Cup 2023.

Shubmang Gill (53) scored his fifty and then got out trying to hit a six, giving a catch to Mahmudullah in deep off Mehidy Hasan. On the other hand, Shreyas Iyer (19) went for a big shot and threw his wicket in the same fashion, which left Gavaskar furious at the India duo.

Gavaskar was not happy with the way Gill and Iyer lost their wickets, as he suggested the duo learn from Virat Kohli on how to convert good starts into big innings. Notably, Kohli notched up his 48th hundred during India’s 7-wicket win in the match against Bangladesh.

Sunil Gavaskar said on Star Sports: “He (Shreyas Iyer) lost his patience. He was batting on 19, and threw his wicket away. Shubman Gill (was batting on) fifty (52), threw his wicket away. Kohli never does that. Kohli will seldom ever throw his wicket away.”

The former Indian skipper added, “He makes you earn his wicket. And that is exactly what you need. When he got to 70-80, realising that he has to get to a hundred and why not? Hundreds don't come every day. You need to know how to get to a hundred and it's important for Shreyas Iyer and Shubman Gill.”

Gavaskar signed off by saying, “Shubman Gill is at least getting hundreds, Shreyas Iyer is not getting hundreds. He is getting his opportunities to bat at number 4 on pitches as good as these and attacks as toothless as this and he is throwing away the opportunity.”
