CWC 2023: ICC names Sachin Tendulkar as the Global Ambassador for Cricket World Cup

ICC ambassadors for the upcoming World Cup 2023 have also been revealed.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has appointed legendary Indian cricketer Bharat Ratna, Sachin Tendulkar as the ICC Global Ambassador for the upcoming ICC Cricket World Cup 2023, just two days before the start of the mega event.

On October 3, the ICC officially announced the appointment of Tendulkar as the ICC Global Ambassador for the Cricket World Cup 2023, starting on October 5. The ICC said the 'Master Blaster' will walk out with the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup trophy before the opening match at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad and announce the start of the mega event.

The biggest Cricket World Cup ever will also have West Indies legend Vivian Richards, South Africa’s AB de Villiers, England World Cup-winning skipper Eoin Morgan, Australia’s Aaron Finch, Sri Lankan spin great Muttiah Muralitharan, New Zealand’s Ross Taylor, India’s Suresh Raina and Mithali Raj, and Pakistan all-rounder Mohammad Hafeez as the ICC ambassadors.

Notably, the World Cup 2023 opener will be played between the defending champions England and the runners-up New Zealand on Thursday, October 5 in Ahmedabad, while the two-time champions and the hosts India will open its campaign against Australia on October 8 in Chennai.

In an ICC release, Sachin Tendulkar said: “From being a ball boy in 1987 to representing the country in six editions, World Cups have always held a special place in my heart. Winning the World Cup in 2011 is the proudest moment of my cricketing journey.”

He signed off by saying, “With so many special teams and players set to compete hard in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 here in India, I am excitedly looking forward to this fantastic tournament. Marquee events like the World Cup seed dreams in young minds, I hope this edition too inspires young girls and boys to pick up sports and represent their countries at the highest level.”
