There is a lot of buzz around the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023, slated to be held in India from October 5 to November 19.
With less than 45 days remaining for the showpiece tournament, experts are back with their opinions.
Former cricketer-turned-commentator Aakash Chopra has tipped India skipper Rohit Sharma to smash two centuries and one daddy hundred during this year's World Cup at home.
Rohit was the top run-getter in the 2019 edition of World Cup in England. The right-handed opener had amassed 648 runs from 9 innings at an average of 81 with five centuries, helping India reach the semi-finals of the marquee event.
"When we talk about the top three, it seems like who is better than us? Sare jahan se acha Hindustan hamara - you get a feeling like that from within because we have Shubman Gill alongside Rohit Sharma, and Virat Kohli will come after them," Chopra said while speaking on his YouTube channel.
"Rohit Sharma has scored more than 9800 runs. He has scored 30 centuries, has an average of nearly 49, and a strike rate of 90. It's almost similar in Asia. So you can assume that Rohit Sharma is going to hit you. If he plays all nine matches, he should score two centuries and one daddy hundred as an opener. I am expecting that," he added.
Aakash Chopra also shared his views on Rohit and Shubman Gill as an opening pair, stating that both of them complement each other well.
Rohit and Gill have batted together in nine ODI innings so far, amassing 685 runs at an average of 76.11.
"Shubman Gill is exactly the same to be fair. His sample size is very small compared to Rohit. He has an average of 62 in 27 games, which becomes 64 in Asia. Three of his four centuries have come in Asia. Shubman Gill and Rohit Sharma complement each other really well," Chopra remarked.
India will open their 2023 ODI World Cup campaign against five-time champions Australia at Chepauk on October 8.
