Asia Cup 2022: “Disappointed with team selection,” Wasim Jaffer reflects on India’s Asia Cup campaign

Team India were knocked out of the Asia Cup from the Super-4 stage.

Indian cricket team | GettyTeam India endured a disappointing Asia Cup 2022 campaign as they failed to make it to the final of the multi-nation tournament.

The Rohit Sharma-led side started the tournament with a bang, winning both their group matches against Pakistan and Hong King. However, their campaign got derailed in the Super-4 stage of the competition after suffering back-to-back defeats at the hands of Pakistan and Sri Lanka.

Although the Men in Blue crushed Afghanistan by 101 runs in their last Super-4 clash, it was too late by then to qualify for the final.

Reflecting on India’s performance, former opener Wasim Jaffer said he was left disappointed by the team’s selection and also by Rohit’s captaincy.

"I was disappointed with the team selection. I have said this many times, repeatedly, that the players that the Indian team has can do the job and they have the potential. But I feel that the right players are not deployed under the right situations," Jaffer said on a CricTracker show.

According to Wasim Jaffer, India made some forceful changes that resulted in their failures. He believes India should have continued with Dinesh Karthik instead of bringing in Rishabh Pant after Ravindra Jadeja got ruled out of the tournament with a knee injury.

"There could have been chances of India losing games even after those players were playing, but I feel the two forceful changes that the team made after Ravindra Jadeja’s exit, it was not a like-for-like change. You had the choice and you could have played an in-form player like Dinesh Karthik. But you kept Pant only because you needed a left-hander, and you played Deepak Hooda only to get the sixth bowling option. That is where the game was affected. So, I would give him a 6/10," he added.

India will now take on Australia and South Africa at home in six T20Is before going to Australia for the T20 World Cup 2022, slated to get underway on October 16.
