Asia Cup 2022: Twitterati react as third umpire’s controversial decision to declare Nissanka out sparks massive outrage

Third umpire upheld the on-field decision even though ultra edge didn't show any spike.

The decision caused massive outrage | TwitterThe 2022 edition of Asia Cup got off to a dull start as Afghanistan crushed Sri Lanka by eight wickets in the tournament opener at Dubai International Cricket Stadium on Saturday (August 27).

Opting to bowl first, Afghanistan bundled out Sri Lanka for a paltry 105 in 19.4 overs and then chased down the target with 59 deliveries to spare.

Apart from Afghanistan’s dominance, the match also grabbed the headlines for a controversial umpiring decision, involving Sri Lanka batter Pathum Nissanka.

During the second over of Sri Lanka’s innings, Afghanistan pacer Naveen-Ul-Haq appealed for a caught behind and the on-field umpire declared Nissanka out.

However, Nissanka was confident that he had not edged it and, thus, he opted for DRS. The replays seemed to validate his confidence as there was a gap between bat and ball. Moreover, the ultra edge did not show any spike as well.

It was then came the ultimate shock as the third umpire upheld the on-field decision and Nissanka was forced to walk off for just three runs.

"I see a spike as the ball passes the bat. Satisfied bat involved," the TV umpire was heard saying on the broadcast.

The decision shocked many including Nissanka himself and the members of the Sri Lankan camp. Cricket fans were also livid by the decision as they took to Twitter to express their anger.
