PAK v ENG 2024: “Wouldn't say my team is mentally weak,” Shan Masood reflects on Pakistan’s listless display in Multan Test

Shan Masood | ScreengrabPakistan lost the first match by an innings and 47 runs against England in Multan despite scoring 556 runs in the first innings.

As a result, Pakistan became the first team in the history of the game to lose a Test by an innings after racking up 500+ runs.

Reflecting on the loss, Pakistan skipper Shan Masood expressed his dejection in the post-match presser as he said: "It is disappointing to lose again. England found a way to win the match; they created their window of opportunity. Harsh reality is that test cricket quality sides find a way to win matches."

Riding on Harry Brook’s triple century (317) and Joe Root’s double hundred (262), the visitors posted a mammoth 823/7 before declaring, securing a substantial first innings lead of 267 runs.

Batting in the second essay, the hosts were bowled out for 220 in the morning session on the final day to lose another Test match on home soil.

"I wouldn't say my team is mentally weak but we expected this pitch to break by the third day onwards that is why we prolonged our innings. But at the end of the day, you have to find ways to take 20 wickets and we are not doing that in recent times," Shan added.

The captain acknowledged that both teams played on the same pitch but stressed on the importance of picking wickets. He also mentioned that Pakistan had not played a Test in Multan since 2022 and had limited interaction with the curator or groundsmen.

Shan admitted that the team was repeating mistakes and not learning from them. He emphasized the need to adapt to changing pitch conditions daily.

Reflecting on the match, he remarked, "We can't blame anyone but ourselves. Where we made lapses they didn't and capitalised on their opportunities. The pitch character did change on the fourth day when we came to bat as some cracks had opened up and there was a little something for the bowlers with the new ball."

Babar Azam's low scores has put him under severe criticism, with many former cricketers calling for his removal from the Test said.

When asked about Babar, Shan said they would review the situation before making any decisions.

"We will sit down and reflect on this test and then make decisions on the squad for the next test," he stated.

Pakistan will hope to turn things around when they take on England next in the second Test in Multan, starting October 15 (Tuesday).
