England completed a remarkable comeback in the Ashes 2023 series as they won the final Test at the Oval by 49 runs to draw the series 2-2, after trailing 0-2. Australia retained the coveted urn successfully but failed to win a Test series in England once again, with their last win coming in 2001.

Stuart Broad, who had announced his retirement from professional cricket on the third day of the just concluded match, took the last two wickets to fall to end with 604 wickets in 167 Test matches. He finished fifth on the list of the all-time leading wicket-takers in the format.

Australia began the final day at 135/0, requiring 249 more runs to win the Test and the series 3-1, but amidst controversy over the changed ball on the previous day, lost three wickets in the opening session to be 238/3 at lunch.

The afternoon session was rained off, and when play resumed post tea, Chris Woakes (4/50) and Moeen Ali (3/76) affected a stunning collapse to leave Australia tottering at 294/8.

Alex Carey and Todd Murphy frustrated the England bowlers with a 35-run partnership before Broad sealed the deal by dismissing both the left-handers to script a fitting finish to his illustrious cricket career for England.
