Ashes 2023: “This England side have got something going,” feels Michael Vaughan after Headingley Test result

England kept the Ashes series alive by winning the third Test at Headingley.

England defeated Australia at Headingley | GettyFacing a must-win situation after losing the first two games, England fought back valiantly to register a three-wicket victory over Australia in the third Test at Headingley on Sunday (July 9) and kept the Ashes series alive.

Speaking to Cricbuzz after the game, former skipper Michael Vaughan said he can’t see Australia’s tail getting too many runs against pacers Mark Wood and Joshua Tongue, insisting that this England side has got something going.

Wood picked up seven wickets across the two innings at Headingley, including a five-wicket haul in Australia’s first essay.

“Mark Wood bowling 95 MPH, can they bring Josh Tongue in as well to have two of those bowling rather quick. Can't see Australia's tail getting too many runs against Mark Wood or Josh Tongue or both in particular. This England side have got something going,” Vaughan stated.

He feels the pitch for the fourth Ashes Test at Old Trafford will be a good one and will assist the spinners.

“Old Trafford will be a good pitch. It'll be bouncy and there'll be a little bit of spin for Moeen Ali and Todd Murphy,” he added.

Australia’s two innings folded for 263 and 224 in Leeds, and Vaughan said England skipper Ben Stokes will know that they’ve left a few scars in the tourists’ batting line-up.

“As far as momentum, I never think momentum works in between games. Always think it comes in the game but genuinely feel this England side have got something. Because they've bowled the Aussies 3 times for under 300, as a captain Ben will know and feel there is a few scars in this Australian batting lineup,” Vaughan remarked.

With this victory, England kept the Ashes alive at 2-1 heading to Old Trafford, slated to host the fourth Test from July 19.
