Ashes 2023: Cricket fraternity reacts as England stay alive in Ashes by winning the third Test at Headingley

England defeated Australia by three wickets in Leeds to make the series scoreline 2-1.

Harry Brook top scored for England in the second innings | GettyEngland registered a three-wicket victory over Australia in the third Ashes 2023 Test at Headingley on Sunday (July 9).

After a two-wicket win at Edgbaston and a 43-run victory at Lord’s, the visitors were in the driving seat to seal the series but the Ben Stokes-led side fought back valiantly in Leeds to keep their Ashes hopes alive.

Chasing 251 to win, England were 27/0 at stumps on Day 3. Australia’s left-arm pacer Mitchell Starc wreaked havoc on the English batting line-up on the penultimate day, reducing the hosts to 171/6 at one stage with his five-wicket haul.

However, young batter Harry Brook held his nerves in pressure situations and played a stunning knock of 75 in the second innings to put England on the brink of victory. In the end, the duo of Chris Woakes (32*) and Mark Wood (16*) returned with handy knocks to take the home team over the finishing line.

Earlier in the match, England conceded a crucial first-innings lead of 26 runs to Australia. However, Stokes and his men bounced back brilliantly on a rain-marred third day to bundle out the tourists for 224.

Finally, on Day 4, England managed to overhaul the target despite a spirited comeback from the Australian team.

Cricket experts on Twitter lauded the England team for winning the third Test and keeping the Ashes series alive.
