Ashes 2023: WATCH – “What did you say mate?” Smith’s animated exchange with Bairstow on Day 2 at Headingley

As soon as Smith was dismissed by off-spinner Moeen Ali for 2, Bairstow said something that annoyed the Australian.

Before heading down to the pavilion, Smith also shouted at Bairstow as stump mic caught their exchange.

According to Sky Sports Cricket, Bairstow said, “See ya Smudge.”

To which, Smith replied, “What did you say mate?” followed by an angry “Hey.”

Bairstow then went on to say, “I said ‘cheers, see you later,” as Smith made a long walk back to the dressing room.

Earlier on Day 2, Australia bundled out England for 237 to take a handy lead of 26 runs. Skipper Ben Stokes waged a lone battle for the hosts, scoring 80 off 108 balls.

For Australia, captain Pat Cummins starred with the ball, picking up six wickets by conceding 91 runs in his 18 overs.

At stumps, the visitors were 116/4, extending their lead to 142 runs with Travis Head (18*) and Mitchell Marsh (17*) unbeaten in the middle.
