IPL form gives you confidence but WTC final will be a completely different game, reckons Shubman Gill

Gill finished the IPL 2023 season as the highest run-getter with 890 runs to his name.

Shubman Gill | GettyShubman Gill has impressed one and all with his stunning exploits in 2023. The stylish right-hander has slammed five international centuries this year so far, including a double ton in an ODI match against New Zealand.

Gill carried on his brilliant form in the recently-concluded IPL 2023 season as well, finishing the tournament as the highest run-getter with 890 runs to his name from 17 innings at a strike rate of 157.80, comprising three hundreds and four half-centuries.

While Shubman has travelled to England for the WTC final with his confidence being sky-high, he believes the five-day format presents an entirely different challenge.

"It does give you a bit of confidence (from the IPL), but I feel this is a completely different scenario and a completely different game," Gill told the ICC.

"But that's the fun about it. Last week we were playing something completely different with a different atmosphere and that is the challenge and that is what is exciting about Test cricket."

Shubman Gill was part of the Indian side that lost the inaugural WTC final to New Zealand by eight wickets two years ago in Southampton.

Gill, who scored 28 and 8 in that final, said his team has learnt a lot from the disappointing defeat against the Kiwis.

"We have been talking about some of the things we have learnt as a team and especially as a batting group from playing that match," he said. "Hopefully we will be able to overcome the mistakes we made last time."

Meanwhile, veteran India batter Cheteshwar Pujara is well prepared for the WTC final having played six games in County Championship Division 2 this season. Playing for Sussex, he registered scores of 115, 35, 18, 13, 151, 136, 77 and 0 from eight innings.

Pujara is confident that India will be able to cross the final hurdle this time around.

"We have had very good preparation so hopefully this time we will cross the line," he said.

"Most of the guys have played enough cricket here and some of them have played County cricket too."

"You need that experience...we know each other's strengths and we have played a lot of cricket against Australia as well so we know what to expect from the opposition team."
