The visitors were one wicket away from victory while the hosts needed 15 runs when play was halted due to bad light, resulting in a 0-0 series tie.

After the game, former South Africa skipper AB de Villiers pointed out a grey area in the rule book regarding the bad light play in Test cricket.

Taking to Twitter, De Villiers wrote: “Another little grey area in the rule book imo. If the fielding team is told to bowl spin because of bad light and they take the option, they should be forced to finish the overs with spin until the Umps call it off, cause they can bring seam on at any time to finish the match."

“If the batting team manages to get it down to 5 or so runs required, the fielding team can just opt to bring on a seamer. Not fair imo," he added.

Spinners Ish Sodhi and Michael Bracewell bowled the last five overs of the day, in which the Kiwis got only one wicket.

Chasing 319 in the fourth innings, Sarfaraz Ahmed produced a stunning century (118) to keep Pakistan in the game but the bad light forced no result in the end.

The home team was on 304/9 when umpires Alex Wharf and Aleem Dar declared the light unfeasible to continue with three overs left. Pakistan’s last pair Naseem Shah (15*) and Abrar Ahmed (7*) played out 21 balls in fading light and their effort didn’t go in vain.
